Over 700 million people use ChatGPT weekly. They can already buy from Etsy sellers, and over one million Shopify merchants (including brands like Glossier, SKIMS, and Vuori) are coming very soon. This isn't a test—it's live, it's growing, and it changes how people shop online.
What is agentic commerce?
Instead of searching Google, visiting websites, and comparing options, your customer asks ChatGPT: "What's the best leather tote bag for work under $300?" They get a curated answer with a Buy button. One conversation, one click, done.
This is "agentic commerce"—AI acting as a shopping assistant that recommends and completes purchases. The big shift? Your customer might never visit your website. The AI reads your product data and recommends you based on relevance alone.
Your carefully designed product pages don't matter if the AI can't understand what you're selling from your product data.
Why this matters now
20% of shoppers already use AI for product discovery. Industry forecasts predict AI-driven commerce could capture 20-30% of online shopping within five years.
That's not distant future, it's 3-5 years away, and the infrastructure launched yesterday.
The implications:
Product discovery changes completely. Customers ask AI for recommendations instead of Googling. Your product data quality becomes your competitive advantage.

Shopify vs Centra: Where you stand
If you're on Shopify: Good news. Shopify partnered directly with OpenAI, over one million U.S. merchants get automatic access on a rolling basis. You don't need to build anything. The competitive advantage is in optimization: better product data, better tracking, faster iteration.
If you're on Centra: Centra hasn't announced native integration yet, and there's no confirmed timeline. We're in close contact with Centra to understand their roadmap and will keep our clients informed as soon as official support is announced.
In the meantime, we're exploring options for Centra merchants who want early access. This includes evaluating custom ACP implementation—Centra's API-first architecture and existing Stripe integration make it technically possible—as well as monitoring other integration solutions as they emerge.
For now, the priority is optimizing your product data and preparing for when ChatGPT integration becomes available through Centra or other channels. We'll make sure you're ready to move fast when the time comes.
What needs to happen
Regardless of platform, your product data needs work:
Complete information: Every product needs detailed descriptions that answer natural language questions. Not just "black leather jacket" but "Italian leather moto jacket in black with silver hardware, slim fit, suitable for casual and semi-formal wear."
AI-friendly descriptions: Can an AI understand from your product data alone that your product fits the customer's need? If someone asks "sustainable sneakers for everyday wear under $150," does your data match?
Proper tracking: You need to monitor ChatGPT referrals, conversion rates, and how this channel performs compared to others.
Integration readiness: Shopify merchants need optimization. Centra merchants need to decide whether to build custom integration or wait.
